Have you ever been around friends, family, or random folks
that are talking about tabletop games and they are using words like: deck
building game, push your luck, work placement, legacy game, or card drafting? Do you have no idea what any of that means? You are not the only one, because tabletop gaming is becoming more
popular and more people will be hearing these words and for some it might
be the thing that turns them away from tabletop gaming. In order to help
prevent this and help people understand these words I will be taking a common
tabletop gaming word and defining, hopefully, a new word each week. This week I
would like to define the word “Legacy Game” since Legacy Games are becoming
more popular.
A Legacy Game is a tabletop game that has a persistent
campaign and each game affects the board and the pieces used to play the game.
For instance, in a Legacy Game the first time you play the rules may state to
add powers to each player’s character via stickers, but the catch is there are two
choices for each player and whichever sticker the player does not choose gets
torn up and thrown away thus forever changing that copy of the game. Legacy
Games have decisions like this throughout them some permanently changing the
game board or adding new rules to the game. Many of the choices and the components that are unboxed are a secret to the players and discussing too many examples may spoil the game. Each Legacy Game plays over many
games and once it is finished the game and all the components are now unique to
that group of players. Because of this it is recommended that Legacy Games are
played with the same group of players in subsequent playthroughs. At the time of this article there are only two Legacy Games out:Risk Legacy and Pandemic Legacy However, a third legacy game is soon to be released: Seafall. Hopefully this definition and those to
follow help the community to understand tabletop gaming definitions. If there
are any tabletop gaming words that the community wants defined next let us know in the comments.
